The NASA District of Columbia Space Grant Consortium is pleased to announce two professional development workshops in summer 2024. Selected teachers will receive a $500 stipend and 30 Educational Units. Both PD's are virtual, via Zoom.
OPPORTUNITY 1
Note: This PD workshop is available to both DC and Maryland STEM teachers. DC teachers will receive their $500 stipend from the NASA DC Space Grant Consortium. Maryland teachers will receive their $500 stipend through a seperate grant managed by the instructor, Dr. Boncho Bonev.
SUMMER 2024 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT VIRTUAL WORKSHOP FOR DC STEM TEACHERS
(GRADES 6-12)
Course Title:
ENGAGE AND UNDERSTAND:
OPTIMIZATION METHODS IN PHYSICAL SCIENCE
Online Summer 2024 STEM Course for Washington, DC and Maryland Middle and High School STEM Teachers!
Receive a $500 Stipend and 30 Educational Units! Up to 17 teachers will be selected to participate!
DATES: July 15-19, 2024

Course Content Highlights:
Virtual meetings will be held entirely online from 9:30AM-3:30PM, with breaks (including lunch and networking).
Science Teachers: Learn new ways to address traditionally difficult concepts in introductory physical science!
Seemingly different topics from the STEM curriculum can be
understood based on a common method!
- Designing a Gravity workshop …
- Kinetic and potential energy – what do we learn from their
sum and difference?
- Optics and the speed of light …
- Radiation from distant objects as a sensitive thermometer …
- Connection of covered topics with SPACE EXPLORATION is
emphasized.
- All ideas are developed on a conceptual level and are accompanied by
visual models.
- Assistance in lesson planning has high priority and can continue after the
completion of this workshop.
The Instructor, Dr. Boncho Bonev, has extensive experience both in NSF and NASA sponsored research and in collaborating with science teachers, including impact on work at Washington, DC schools; developing innovative curriculum for STEM teacher professional development and for undergraduate Liberal Arts students; and leadership in NSF and NASA sponsored research.
Teachers will be encouraged to collaborate and share ideas for lesson planning.
Eligibility: Must be a public, private, charter, or parochial STEM teacher in Grades 6-12 at a school in the District of Columbia or Maryland.

OPPORTUNITY #2
“Doing Science”: Cognitively Demanding Tasks in the NGSS Science Classroom.
How to design, implement, and engage your students in high cognitive demand science tasks!
Online Summer STEM PD Workshop for Washington, DC Middle and High School STEM Teachers!
Teachers who are Selected (up to 10) to Participate will Receive a $500 Stipend and 30 Educational Units!
DATES: TBA
Virtual meetings will be held entirely online from 8:30AM-4:30PM, with breaks (including lunch).
Deadline to Apply: TBA
Learn new ways to address traditionally difficult concepts in introductory physical science!
Course Content Highlights include:
Consider what it means for students to be engaged in “doing” science while in class.
Identify key components of cognitively demanding science tasks that still provide students necessary scaffolding and support to be successful.
Study and develop lessons aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards.
Design and modify tasks for each teacher’s own classroom that can be directly applied to engage students.
Course Presentation Approach:
Course content will be grounded in existing standards, as well as educational research and methods.
Teachers will engage in various tasks from the “student perspective”.
Teachers will have time to discuss and collaborate, both in small groups as well as with all participants in the course.
Teachers will have ample dedicated time to apply learning to tasks specific to their content and courses.
Eligibility:
Must be a public, private, charter, or parochial STEM teacher in Grades 6-12 at a school in the District of Columbia.
Instructor: Allison McMahon is a chemistry teacher at Elenor Roosevelt High School in Prince George's County, MD.
Instructor Education, Honors, and Awards:
