American University’s College of Arts & Sciences (CAS), in partnership with the NASA DC Space Grant Consortium (DCSGC), is pleased to announce the 2025 CAS Summer Undergraduate Fellowships.
IMPORTANT: this application is only for STEM students who are majoring in: Applied Mathematics, Audio Technology, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Computational Science, Data Science, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Mathematics, Neuroscience, Physics, Public Health, and Statistics.
The fellowships will support student-initiated research and creative activities completed under the direction of faculty mentors. The fellowships provide $5,000 awards to students and $500 stipends to faculty mentors, who will provide mentorship over the summer to help students develop and execute research projects. Please note that these awards may be taxable. Student awardees must have declared CAS majors and faculty mentors must be full-time CAS faculty during the period of the award.
Students may receive only one summer award (including Provost's Summer Scholars and Artist Award and other departmental awards) and are required to work on their research project for 34 hours/week for 8 weeks in Summer 2025. Any summer session courses taken by students must fall outside the period designated for their research or creative project.
Applications are due by Tuesday, March 25, 2025 at 8:00AM and students will be notified of decisions by Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
Applications Require the Following Components:

- A 1-3 page project proposal: Your project proposal should include 1) motivation/background for the project; 2) a project plan and timeline that includes discussion of preparation and feasibility; 3) a plan for how the results of your research will be disseminated; and 4) a statement about how this project advances your academic, professional, and/or personal goals. The proposal should be 1-3 pages long and in .doc/docx format.
- A letter of support/recommendation from your proposed faculty mentor (see link below). Faculty members must be full-time CAS faculty during the award period.
