1) What sort of a time commitment will I need to make during the academic year?
Answer: We estimate that Phases 1 and 4 will require 4-5 hours per week throughout the academic year. Phases 2 and 3 are scheduled to occur right after the spring 2014 academic term ends, and Phases 5 and 6 will occur at the end of the Spring 2015 academic term.
2) How and when is the $5,000 stipend paid?
Answer: You will receive the $5,000 stipend in installments after each phase is completed, including the submission of brief online surveys at the beginning and end of each phase.
3) What is the timeline for this program?
Answer: The program will last from approximately February 2014 through May 2015, with no activities planned during summer 2014. Activities are planned for three academic semesters: Spring 2014, Fall 2014, and Spring 2015.
4) Can I just participate in some of the phases?
Answer: No. In order to participate, you must be available and commit to participating in all six phases of this program.
5) What if I have an emergency and miss part of an activity, will I still get paid?
Answer: The $5,000 stipend will be divided in installments to be paid upon completion of each phase and pre and post activity online surveys. If you miss part of an activity, you will only receive a partial installment. If you miss a significant part of an activity, your participation in the program will be terminated.
6) Do I have to be a U.S. citizen to apply?
Answer: Yes. This opportunity is only avaiable to U.S. citizens.
7) Are freshmen or seniors or graduate students eligible?
Answer: To be eligible, students must be undergraduate sophomores or juniors, or in the third year of a preservice teacher program at the time they apply.
8) What majors are eligible?
Answer: You can major in any STEM discipline (physics, biology, computer science, etc), or any Education discipline. However, you must have a demonstrated interest in teaching K-12 STEM and intend to enroll in a preservice teacher program, if not already enrolled.
