2015 AMERICAN UNIVERSITY STEM FACULTY SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY

Description: The NASA District of Columbia Space Grant Consortium is seeking applicants for summer research grants for faculty-student research teams from STEM faculty members at American University. Each research team should consist of one faculty member and one student. Research will be conducted during summer 2015. The intent of the program is to provide university research opportunities to increase and enhance STEM knowledge among faculty and students in research areas that support the mission and goals of NASA. In addition, the program is designed to provide faculty and students with an opportunity to understand and advance the research needs of NASA, while strengthening the talent pool of scientists and engineers.

Discipline(s): NASA related science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)

Eligibility: Faculty members and students must be U.S. Citizens.

Participating Universities: Eligible applicants must teach a STEM discipline at American University.

Location(s): Research must be conducted in a university setting.

Duration: Summer 2015 (Exact Start Date TBD; End Date August 25, 2015).

Deadline: Application deadline is April 28, 2015.

Announcement: Awards will be announced by May 8, 2015.

Awards made: Two faculty-student teams will be competitively awarded by an interdisciplinary selection committee. All decisions are final.

Awards/Cost Share: Faculty members will receive a grant of $14,000 to carry out their proposed research project over summer 2015 with a full-time AU student who is majoring in a STEM discipline. The student will receive a Space Grant internship/scholarship award to work on the research project, separate from the $14,000 grant. Students will be paid an hourly rate of $13.50 for undergraduates or $16.50 for graduates, for a maximum of $4,420 including fringe. The grant may include faculty summer salary up to $12,000 (including fringe), domestic travel, supplies/materials, and other pre-approved allowable expenses. No equipment purchases are allowed. Both faculty members and students must be US citizens. Faculty must identify, select, and include a student researcher on their team. Students need not be selected by the proposal submission date but must be selected by the start date of the project. Female and minority student participation is encouraged. All grant costs must be finalized by August 25, 2015 and invoiced by September 25, 2015.

Faculty must submit a proposal for summer research in a STEM field with meaningful student involvement, a detailed budget, and a CV.

Proposals/Budgets: Proposals must be a maximum of three pages long, double spaced, 1” margins, 12pt font, in Microsoft Word format. Budgets must be a maximum of one page long, in addition to the three page proposal, and must include a detailed breakdown of the $14,000 grant including salary rates. (Maximum four pages total)

Proposal Topic: Describe a STEM summer research project that you would undertake with an undergraduate and/or graduate student, and how the project relates to NASA’s missions, goals, or research needs. The project should describe meaningful involvement with the student.
